Anxiety is a normal part of human living; most people feel anxious or nervous at times and sometimes anxiety can be valuable when it serves to alert a person to a dangerous situation. However, for some people, anxiety is more than a normal, expected reaction to a stressful situation.
What is Generalized Anxiety?
Some people experience anxiety to such a degree that it interferes with some, or perhaps all, elements of adult daily living: working, relationships with family and friends, tending to self-care and daily needs, physical and mental health, and managing routine tasks. For people with an anxiety disorder, excessive worry, fear and nervousness can be so constant and overpowering that it can be debilitating and disabling.
Anxiety disorders can be categorized into different themes including panic disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, social anxiety disorder, specific phobias, and generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). Each anxiety disorder has a different set of symptoms associated with it, however, all symptoms have the shared experience of excessive, irrational fear and/or dread.
Anxiety disorders can often occur alongside other mental or physical illnesses, such as alcohol or substance abuse, depression, or a medical condition, which may mask anxiety symptoms or possibly exacerbate them. Further, because of the high levels of stress that accompany anxiety disorders, many people experience significant physical symptoms (breathing trouble, GI problems, headaches, blood pressure abnormalities, etc.) which can require medical treatment as well. Anxiety disorders are a mental illness and as such require treatment in order to learn effective coping strategies so as to minimize disruption to daily living.
How Hanbleceya treats Generalized Anxiety
It is not uncommon for individuals with an anxiety disorder to experience significant difficulty in their interpersonal relationships, often as a result of the extreme preoccupation with worry and fear that it makes it difficult to fully engage with other people or in social activities. Hanbleceya’s supportive therapeutic community creates a safe space for a person with an anxiety disorder to learn anxiety coping skills and stress management techniques within a social context, thereby reducing the isolation and social avoidance so commonly experienced by those who suffer from severe anxiety.

The mutually supportive nature of the community allows program participants to not only learn effective anxiety management strategies from one another, but also to practice them in the moment with their peers, an extremely important element for healing considering the typically compromised interpersonal relationships people with anxiety disorders tend to experience. The treatment team at Hanbleceya incorporates a strong Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) approach, seeing it as a cornerstone of what is essential to anxiety disorder treatment: identifying, understanding and changing distressing thinking and behavioral patterns, and doing so within a social context that allows for repetition and practice of new skills, also essential for healing and recovery.
